Pennylane
Role: Director | Level Designer | Game Designer | Producer
Platform: PC | Developed during Year 3 of BA (Hons) Computer Games Design

Pennylane is a first-person psychological horror game that follows Giles, a father desperately searching for his missing daughter Emily after a car crash. Haunted by disturbing visions and inner voices, Giles struggles to separate reality from delusion, as the horrors he faces are both external and internal. The game explores themes of loss, psychosis, and trauma, blending narrative-driven gameplay with atmospheric tension.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Director & Producer: Led a small multidisciplinary team, using project management tools (e.g., Trello, Agile boards) to manage development, assign tasks, and ensure the team stayed aligned with the project vision.

  • Level Design: Designed and implemented gameplay spaces in Unreal Engine, focusing on layout, player flow, and environmental storytelling.

  • Lighting & Mood Design: Crafted scene lighting to reflect psychological themes and reinforce emotional beats, guided by cinematic lighting theory.

  • Narrative Design: Developed the game’s story structure, character arc, and narrative beats. Wrote dialogue and contributed to in-game events that tied into the protagonist’s deteriorating mental state.

  • Documentation: Authored the Game Design Document (GDD) and supporting materials to communicate design intent, progression, and production milestones.

This project deepened my skills in directing creative teams, building compelling horror environments, and delivering a cohesive, story-driven experience in Unreal Engine.
